Chapter 12

The broomstick whizzed away, leaving me in Sol’s arms.

I stared at him, too stunned to speak for several seconds. “What... what are you doing here?”

“Saving you. Are you okay?”

“I’m fine. I’m just out of practice when it comes to riding broomsticks. Um... Thanks for the rescue.”

He set me on my feet but kept hold of me. “I’ve never seen any broomsticks at the farm. What made you suddenly want to buy one?”

“Odessa, are you okay?” Alastair rushed over with a toolbox in his hand. “I’m so sorry. There must be a fault on the broomstick. I’ve never seen it behave like that.”

I eased away from Sol’s arms, even though it felt great to be wrapped in them. “I’m sure your broomstick is fine. It’s my lack of practice that’s the problem.”

“You’re already proving yourself. I have a feeling you’ll be an asset to this place.” Alastair patted Sol on the arm. “Odessa, if you’re sure you’re okay, I’ll collect my errant broomstick and check the magic isn’t faulty. I’ve got every tool I need to fix her, and then you can try again.”

“No, thanks. But you go. I’m fine.” I was studying Sol’s face. He was no longer looking at me.

Once Alastair walked away, I cocked my head at Sol. “You didn’t answer my question about what you’re doing here. And why does Alastair think you’re an asset?”

Sol kept his gaze on the ground and pushed his hands into his pants pockets. “I came here for a job interview.”

“Oh! You want to leave the farm? Why? I’ve just offered you more responsibility. I know we haven’t figured out the details, but isn’t that what you want?”

“There’s so much I want, but I can’t get it from you.”

My stomach plummeted. This wasn’t about his workload. “You can tailor the job however you like. And there’s plenty of work to keep you busy on the farm. If there’s a job you don’t like doing, we can work something out.”

“You know that’s not what I mean.”

“Got it.” Alastair strode back toward us, clutching the broomstick.

I stared at Sol for a few more seconds before turning to Alastair. “Great. I’m glad it didn’t get damaged.”

“My broomsticks are hardy. I’ll give this one a service and make sure it doesn’t happen again,” Alastair said. He looked from me to Sol. “Ah. I see this might be awkward, Sol being here for an interview and all.”

“It’s not awkward,” I said. “I’m just surprised. This is the first I’m learning that Sol wants to leave the farm.”

“I don’t. I’m exploring my options,” Sol said.

“And I’m in desperate need of an experienced estate manager,” Alastair said. “I hate poaching from your team, Odessa, but Sol has excellent references and experience.”

“He hasn’t asked me for a reference,” I said. “Maybe you’ll change your mind when I give you one.”

Alastair chuckled and rubbed the back of his neck. “Maybe so. And I’m still interviewing. I’m seeing two more people this morning, so nothing is decided.”

I glared at Sol. “That’s good.
